1. The Logistics

Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park): Rwanda is the king of convenience. After landing at Kigali International Airport, it is a smooth, two hour drive on paved roads to the park headquarters. For those utilizing a private fly in safari, a helicopter transfer can get you from the city to the lodge in about 25 minutes. Uganda (Bwindi): Bwindi is deeper in the wilderness. The drive from Entebbe can take up to nine hours. However, this is exactly why we recommend flying. 2. The Trekking Experience

Volcanoes National Park (The “Open” Trek): Trekking here takes place on the slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes. The vegetation consists largely of bamboo forests and open glades. This often makes for “cleaner” photography and slightly easier walking conditions. Because the terrain is more open, you often feel the scale of the mountains around you. Bwindi (The “Impenetrable” Trek): The name isn’t marketing it’s a description. Bwindi is an ancient, thick rainforest. You will likely be following a ranger as they machete a path through tangled vines and giant ferns. It feels raw, primeval, and deeply adventurous. If you want to feel like an old world explorer, Bwindi wins.

4. The Price Point

There is no getting around it: Rwanda is significantly more expensive. With permits at $1,500, Rwanda has positioned itself as a low volume, high cost destination. You are paying for exclusivity and the seamlessness of the infrastructure. Uganda’s permits at $800. This price gap doesn’t mean the experience is budget. In fact, it often allows luxury travelers to stay longer. Many of our clients at Jackal Adventures find that they can afford two treks in Uganda for the price of one in Rwanda, allowing them to see two different gorilla families.

5. Beyond the Gorillas: What Else?

In Rwanda: The add ons are refined. You can visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund or trek for Golden Monkeys. The focus is very much on the Virunga conservation story.
