How Jackal Wild Adventures Vets Luxury Lodges
February 5, 2026Bwindi vs Volcanoes
For the high end traveler in 2026, the question isn’t if you should see the mountain gorillas, but where. The choice usually boils down to two legendary locations: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Both offer life changing encounters with the world’s largest primates, but the luxury experience in each is vastly different. At Jackal Adventures, we believe the best destination depends entirely on your personal style of adventure. Here is our honest, no filter comparison to help you decide.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
1. The Logistics
Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park): Rwanda is the king of convenience. After landing at Kigali International Airport, it is a smooth, two hour drive on paved roads to the park headquarters. For those utilizing a private fly in safari, a helicopter transfer can get you from the city to the lodge in about 25 minutes. Uganda (Bwindi): Bwindi is deeper in the wilderness. The drive from Entebbe can take up to nine hours. However, this is exactly why we recommend flying. A private charter to the Kihihi or Kisoro airstrip turns a grueling day of travel into a scenic 75-minute flight over the “Switzerland of Africa” and the stunning Lake Bunyonyi
2. The Trekking Experience
Volcanoes National Park (The “Open” Trek): Trekking here takes place on the slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes. The vegetation consists largely of bamboo forests and open glades. This often makes for “cleaner” photography and slightly easier walking conditions. Because the terrain is more open, you often feel the scale of the mountains around you. Bwindi (The “Impenetrable” Trek): The name isn’t marketing it’s a description. Bwindi is an ancient, thick rainforest. You will likely be following a ranger as they machete a path through tangled vines and giant ferns. It feels raw, primeval, and deeply adventurous. If you want to feel like an old world explorer, Bwindi wins.

Rwanda Gorilla Safaris
3. Luxury Comparison
| Feature | Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda) | Bwindi Impenetrable (Uganda) |
| Permit Cost | $1,500 per person | $800 per person |
| Lodge Style | Ultra-modern, high-concept luxury | Classic, intimate “Bush Chic” |
| Vibe | Sophisticated & Polished | Remote & Immersive |
4. The Price Point
There is no getting around it: Rwanda is significantly more expensive. With permits at $1,500, Rwanda has positioned itself as a low volume, high cost destination. You are paying for exclusivity and the seamlessness of the infrastructure. Uganda’s permits at $800. This price gap doesn’t mean the experience is budget. In fact, it often allows luxury travelers to stay longer. Many of our clients at Jackal Adventures find that they can afford two treks in Uganda for the price of one in Rwanda, allowing them to see two different gorilla families.
5. Beyond the Gorillas: What Else?
In Rwanda: The add ons are refined. You can visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund or trek for Golden Monkeys. The focus is very much on the Virunga conservation story. In Uganda: Bwindi offers more variety for the nature lover. Because the park is a UNESCO World Heritage site with incredible biodiversity, you have world class birdwatching, Batwa cultural experiences, and the nearby Lake Bunyonyi for a post trek unwind
The Jackal Adventures Verdict
Choose Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda) if: You have limited time, you prioritize ultra luxury lodge brands, and you want the most seamless, polished logistics possible. Choose Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Uganda) if: You want an authentic, deep forest adventure, you prefer a more diverse landscape, and you want your luxury budget to go further without sacrificing the quality of your stay. Whichever you choose, the moment you lock eyes with a Silverback, the logistics and the cost melt away. There is nothing else like it on Earth.
