The Nyakagezi Exclusivity
When most travelers think of mountain gorillas in Uganda, they immediately think of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. It’s the famous one, the UNESCO World Heritage site with over 20 inhabited families and a bustling tourism hum. But for those in the know, there is a quieter, more profound alternative. At Jackal Adventures, we often guide our more discerning guests toward Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Mgahinga is Uganda’s smallest national park, yet it carries an air of exclusivity that Bwindi simply cannot match. The reason? One single group. While Bwindi hosts hundreds of trekkers across four different sectors every morning, Mgahinga belongs almost entirely to the Nyakagezi family. This one group exclusivity transforms the trekking experience from a popular bucket-list activity into something that feels like a private expedition in a royal reserve.

Why Mgahinga is Uganda’s Private Safari Secret
The Power of One
In Bwindi, the morning briefing is a logistical symphony of dozens of people being sorted into groups. In Mgahinga, the atmosphere is stripped back. Because there is only one habituated family available for tourism (the Nyakagezi), the park limits its gorilla permits to just eight per day.
When you trek with Jackal Adventures in Mgahinga, you aren’t just one of many; you are part of the only eight humans in the entire 33.7-square-kilometer park allowed to see gorillas that day. This scarcity creates a sense of profound stillness. There are no other trekking groups on the trails, no radio chatter about other families, and no crowds at the trailhead. It is just you, your Jackal Adventures guide, the UWA rangers, and the mist-covered volcanoes.
The Nyakagezi Family
The Nyakagezi group themselves are worth the journey. Historically known for their nomadic tendencies, often crossing borders into Rwanda and the DRC, they have settled firmly in the Ugandan side of the Virunga Massif for over a decade.
This family is unique because of its high concentration of silverbacks. Usually, a family has one dominant male who eventually chases off his rivals. The Nyakagezi group is a rare multi-male society, led by the dominant Silverback Mark, who famously coexists with several other silverbacks, including the venerable Bugingo, who is estimated to be over 54 years old. Watching three or four silverbacks interact in a single clearing is a sight you rarely see in the denser sectors of Bwindi.
Silver Meets Gold
The private reserve feel of Mgahinga is amplified by its unique biodiversity. It is the only place in Uganda where Silver Meets Gold. Because the park consists of bamboo forests and volcanic slopes, it is the primary habitat for the endangered Golden Monkey.
At Jackal Adventures, we recommend a two-day stay: one day for your exclusive gorilla encounter and a second day for golden monkey tracking. Since Mgahinga receives only a fraction of Bwindi’s foot traffic, you often have the bamboo forests to yourself.

Why Mgahinga is Uganda’s Private Safari Secret
Landscape and Legend
The backdrop of Mgahinga is arguably the most dramatic in East Africa. The park sits on the slopes of three extinct volcanoes: Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabyinyo, and Mount Gahinga. The vegetation is more open than the thick, tangled vines of Bwindi, allowing for better photography and clearer views of the gorillas.
Furthermore, the cultural experience here is unparalleled. The Batwa Trail in Mgahinga is a living history lesson. Unlike the cultural performances outside Bwindi, the Mgahinga trail takes you into the forest to the Garama Cave, where the Batwa lived as kings of the jungle. It feels authentic, unhurried, and deeply moving.

The Jackal Adventures Edge in Mgahinga
Why book your Mgahinga trek with Jackal Adventures? Because with only eight permits available, the stakes are high.
- Early Access: We have a direct line to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to secure these high-demand permits months in advance.
- Strategic Lodging: We partner with exclusive lodges like Mount Gahinga Lodge, which offers a direct private entrance into the park, maintaining that private reserve luxury from the moment you wake up.
- Expert Naturalists: Our guides are trained to understand the specific volcanic terrain of the Virungas, ensuring your trek is paced to your fitness level while providing deep insights into the volcano’s geology.
- Seamless Transitions: If you are coming from Rwanda, Mgahinga is actually closer and easier to reach than Bwindi, making it the perfect fly-in addition to a Kigali-based itinerary.
Practical Tips for the Mgahinga Trekker
- Book 6-12 Months Ahead: With only eight permits a day, they disappear quickly, especially during the dry seasons (June–August and December–February).
- Layer Up: Mgahinga is higher in altitude than Bwindi. It gets significantly colder, especially in the early mornings.
- Hire a Porter: Even if you are fit, hiring a porter supports the local community and makes the volcanic scramble much more enjoyable.
- Prepare for Altitude: The trekking starts at roughly 2,200 meters. Drink plenty of water and allow a day to acclimate in Kisoro if possible.
Final Thoughts
Bwindi is a miracle of biodiversity that every traveler should see. But Mgahinga is a secret that every traveler should feel. There is something hauntingly beautiful about standing in the shadow of a volcano, knowing you are among a handful of people on the planet sharing that space with the gorillas.
At Jackal Adventures, we don’t just want to show you a gorilla; we want to give you the silence and space to truly connect with one.
